Pre-Flight Checklist: Preparing Your Dog for International Travel

Everything to confirm before your dog's international flight — documents, health steps, and carrier prep in one checklist.

Use this checklist in the months leading up to an international flight with your dog. Requirements vary by destination, so pair this with your destination-specific guide.

4–6 Months Before

  • Confirm your destination's entry requirements — some require a rabies titer test with a long waiting period
  • Microchip your dog if not already done
  • Schedule required vaccinations, spaced correctly relative to any titer test

1–2 Months Before

  • Book an airline-approved carrier sized to your dog
  • Confirm your airline's specific pet travel policy and fees
  • Research approved routes and entry points for your destination

1–2 Weeks Before

  • Schedule your health certificate appointment — many countries require this within 10 days of travel
  • Submit any required advance notification or import permit paperwork
  • Pack a travel folder with both digital and paper copies of all documents

Day of Travel

  • Bring printed and digital copies of all paperwork
  • Feed a light meal several hours before departure
  • Arrive early to allow time for document checks
Requirements differ significantly by destination. Always confirm specifics with the destination country's official pet import authority before travel.
